CHILE: Piñera dealt fresh defeat

Only one of Chile’s 16 regional governors that take office on 14 July will represent President Sebastián Piñera’s right-of-centre Chile Vamos coalition. This could provide the beleaguered Piñera with another headache for his final eight months in office. The governors, elected by popular vote for the first time to serve a four-year term rather than handpicked by the head of state, will provide a counterweight to the central government. As many as 13 of the 16 regional contests held one month earlier went to a second round on 13 June and the big winner was the centre-left Unidad Constituyente coalition. A record low turnout means it would be a mistake to read too much into the significance of the result, however, ahead of presidential and congressional elections on 21 November.
