ARGENTINA: More foreign policy missteps

The Argentine government has taken some controversial foreign policy moves in recent months. Its decision to withdraw from the Lima Group of countries monitoring the political crisis in Venezuela after accusing the group of being intent on forcing regime change, and its forceful condemnation of Israel’s attacks on Gaza while ignoring its right to self-defence have put the administration led by President Alberto Fernández at odds with most of its neighbours, the US, and the wider international community. The leftist Fernández government has been accused by critics of basing its foreign policy on ideology rather than the national interest. Undeterred, the Fernández government once again adopted a polemical foreign policy stance that could produce more problems than benefits for Argentina.
