In brief: Peru’s exports to return to pre-pandemic levels this year, says minister

* Peru’s foreign trade & tourism minister, Claudia Cornejo, has said that the country’s exports are likely to recover from the economic impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic by December 2021. Cornejo said that exports increased by approximately 30% year-on-year in January-April, which she said indicated that Peru is “definitely” on a trajectory to “return to the pre-Covid figures”. Peruvian exports fell by 15.7% to US$39.1bn in 2020 compared with 2019. Cornejo said that the export recovery is being driven by metals, textiles, and agricultural products. She said that this was due in large part to increased trade with China, which rose by 35% year-on-year in the first four months of 2021. The minister also expressed confidence that the free trade agreement (FTA) signed in December 2020 with the United Kingdom would further boost export performance.
