Cuba celebrated two victories this week. One of them is likely to prove rather more meaningful than the other. On 20 June the government led by President Miguel Diaz-Canel revealed that the vaccine developed by Cuba against the coronavirus (Covid-19), Abdala, had an impressively high effectiveness in clinical trials. If accurate, this would be a big boost for Cuba, especially as it is experiencing a marked uptick in case numbers, and for Latin America as a whole. The other victory, which was celebrated even more fervently, was the annual vote by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 23 June in favour of a resolution calling for an end to the economic, commercial, and financial embargo imposed by the US on Cuba.
