In brief: Argentina’s unemployment rate shows sign of improvement

*Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has released the latest employment figures, which show that the national unemployment rate fell to 10.2% in the first quarter of 2021. This is marginally lower than the 10.4% recorded in the same quarter of 2020. But Indec highlighted that it is significantly lower than the 13.1%, 11.7%, and 11% rates posted in the second, third, and fourth quarters of 2020. The latest figures reflect a continued recovery of the domestic labour market, as the employment rate rose to 41.6% in Q1 2021, the highest figure since Argentina’s first strict national lockdown in March 2020 designed to contain the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19).
