In brief: UNWTO optimistic on impact of Mexico’s Tren Maya

* Zurab Pololikashvili, the secretary general of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), has said that the Tren Maya railway, a flagship infrastructure project of the Mexican government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, could “double or triple local and international tourism in Mexico’s south-east region in the short term”. The Tren Maya railway line will connect the Yucatán peninsula with the rest of south-eastern Mexico. Pololikashvili made his comments during a visit to Yucatán state. He said Tren Maya was “a big project because it will connect the most important tourism destinations on the Yucatán peninsula” and will be “very successful”.
