Argentina takes evasive action in bid to buy time

When Argentina’s President Alberto Fernández came to power in December 2019 it was widely assumed that his term in office would be defined by his government’s ability to balance economic imperatives with social demands. Within months the need to restructure the country’s mountainous debt while retaining social spending took on an entirely new complexion with the onset of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, which has taken a heavy toll, providing an unprecedented public health challenge while compounding the country’s acute economic difficulties. As such, in spite of the urgent need to reactivate the economy, fear of the Delta variant of Covid-19 washing up on Argentine shores prompted Fernández to impose stringent controls on international flight arrivals this week. At best, this will delay the arrival and spread of this strain of the virus and provide some additional time to get more jabs in arms.
