URUGUAY: Lacalle Pou makes key cabinet change

Uruguay’s President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou made an unexpected change at the top of the agriculture, livestock, and fisheries ministry this week. One of the plum cabinet ministries in Uruguay, it had been led by Carlos María Uriarte. But Lacalle Pou tweeted on 27 June that he had decided to replace Uriarte with the incumbent president of the Instituto Nacional de Carnes (Inac), Fernando Mattos. Uriarte expressed surprise over his replacement but he appears to have lost the confidence of both his president and his party.

This was the fifth cabinet change President Lacalle Pou has carried out since he took office in March 2020 and, as with the previous four, he needed to preserve the delicate balance within his politically diverse five-party ruling coalition. Lacalle Pou said he had taken the decision after consultation with one of those five parties, the right-of-centre Partido Colorado (PC; Colorados), to which Uriarte and Mattos belong.
