MEXICO: Organised crime drives electoral violence, influences elections

According to a report compiled by local electoral observation organisations, organised criminal activity affected the 6 June midterm elections in around a third of Mexico’s territory. This is consistent with recent comments made by US government officials that organised criminal groups are in effective control of around 30% of Mexico. The report’s findings prompt questions over whether the electoral process in these areas was free and fair and just how much of a threat this poses for Mexico’s still fragile democracy.
