In brief: Pemex reports a gas leak in the Gulf of Mexico

* Mexico’s state-owned oil company, Pemex, has reported a gas leak in a submarine gas duct located 150m from the Satélite KU-C platform located off the coast of the state of Campeche in the Gulf of Mexico. The gas leak reportedly started a fire but was immediately extinguished by the closing of all interconnection valves in the relevant duct. Security protocols were carried out with the support of nearby vessels including the Santa Cruz Islands, Campeche Banks, and Bourbon Alienor. The contingency was completely resolved approximately five hours after the leak was initially reported and normal operations have resumed. The authorities reported that noone was injured or evacuated due to the incident. Pemex said it will carry out an investigation into the root cause of the leak. The incident comes amid growing concerns about the heavily indebted Pemex’s ability to spend enough funds on maintaining and repairing its infrastructure.
