* Colombia’s national federation of coffee producers (FNC) has announced that the country’s coffee exports fell by 11% in June compared to the same month in 2020. Coffee exports in June totalled 986,000 sacks of green coffee (weighing 60kg each), compared with 1.11m sacks in June 2020. The FNC attributed the decline to a 40-day blockade of Colombia’s largest maritime port in Buenaventura, Valle del Cauca department, during weeks of recent anti-government protests. According to the FNC’s director, Roberto Vélez Vallejo, 60% of Colombian coffee exports exit the country via Buenaventura. In the first half of this year, coffee exports grew 2% to reach 5.8m sacks, compared to 5.7m during the first half of 2020. However, in the 12 months to June coffee exports were down 2% compared to the July 2019-June 2020 period, demonstrating the impact that protests have had on coffee exporters.
