In brief: Mexico and US strike deal over GM labour dispute

* The Mexican and US governments have announced an agreement under the terms of the Mexico-US-Canada Agreement (USMCA) regional trade deal in relation to a dispute over the alleged violation of labour rights at a General Motors plant in Silao, Guanajuato state. According to a statement by US Trade Representative Katherine Tai, the two governments have reached a remediation plan which “will provide workers with the ability to vote on whether to approve their collective bargaining agreement in free and democratic conditions.” This is the first remediation course of the USMCA’s Rapid Response Labour Mechanism (RRLM) labour dispute settlement scheme.
