Nuland visits Central America

El Salvador/Panama: Between 27 and 30 June, US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland travelled to Panama and El Salvador heading a delegation that included representatives from the US National Security Council, the US Department of Defence, and the US Southern Command. In Panama, Nuland met with President Laurentino Cortizo, Acting Foreign Minister Dayra Carrizo, and Panama Canal Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez. In El Salvador Nuland met with President Nayib Bukele and Foreign Minister Alexandra Hill. The delegation also met with young innovators, entrepreneurs, and other civil society leaders in both countries. In her meeting with President Cortizo, Nuland highlighted the need for cooperation in managing the challenges of irregular migration, forced displacement, and climate change. She emphasised the “importance of data privacy and customer trust in maintaining regional technological infrastructure integrity” and underscored US support for Panama’s efforts to combat illicit finance through the joint Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Corruption Task Force. In El Salvador Nuland reinforced US support for strong democratic institutions, transparency, and rule of law in meetings with Bukele and Hill; and in roundtables with civil society and with young Salvadoran political leaders. She also engaged with Salvadoran entrepreneurs on job creation and investment in the region to address one of the root causes of irregular migration.
