Special Report - Drugs in Latin America: Part 2 (ISSN 17414474)

A growing problem or just an ideological enemy?

Establishing the facts about Venezuela's role in the world drug trade is all but impossible. All the data is coloured by the antagonism between President George W Bush and President Hugo Chávez . The US asserts that Venezuela has become a major conduit for drug trafficking to both the US and Europe because the Chávez government is either in league with traffickers such as the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) or is too corrupt to do anything to combat the drug gangs. The Venezuelan government argues, and draws on UN figures to support its case, that it is a stern adversary to the drug trade and intercepts around half the drugs that attempt to cross its territory.
