In brief: Mexico’s international tourism on the road to recovery

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released new figures which show that 4.59m tourists visited Mexico in May, of which 2.66m were international tourists. This represents an increase of 198.5% in the arrival of international tourists compared with May 2020, showing the impact of the travel restrictions put in place around the world last year to contain the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Although international tourism is recovering in Mexico, it is yet to return to pre-pandemic levels, with the number of international visitors still below the 3.46m who visited Mexico in May 2019. The Inegi report indicated that revenue from international tourists totalled US$1.49bn in May 2021, a surge of 1,455.6% compared with the same period in 2020. The revenue generated by tourism remains below pre-pandemic levels, but individual tourists are spending more, with the average spending per international tourist reaching US$560.06 in May, compared with US$107.48 in May 2020 and US$507.94 in May 2019.
