In brief: Think-tank warns poverty set to rise in Honduras

* Honduran think-tank, Foro Social de la Deuda Externa de Honduras (Fosdeh), has warned that the poverty rate in Honduras could rise from 70% of the population to 75% in 2021 due to the economic impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, among other factors. According to a May report by Honduras’s Universidad Nacional Autónoma (Unah), poverty in Honduras increased to 70% of the population in 2020, up 10.7 percentage points on 2019 due to the pandemic and the tropical storms ‘Eta’ and ‘Iota’ which made landfall in November 2020. The study showed that 53.4% of households were living in extreme poverty, up 16.7 percentage points on 2019.
