MEXICO: New self-defence group sprouts up

A new self-defence group of armed civilians, or autodefensas, has appeared in the southernmost state of Chiapas in response to growing violence from organised criminal groups. The group, known as ‘El Machete’, announced its arrival on the scene in the wake of the violent takeover of the Chiapas municipality of Pantelhó by a local drug gang, Los Ciriles, which is also suspected of killing indigenous human rights defender (HRD) Simón Pedro Pérez López last week.
