US issues more sanctions against Nicaraguan public officials

Nicaragua: On 12 July the US Department of State imposed visa restrictions on 100 members of Nicaragua’s national assembly and judicial system, including prosecutors and judges, as well as some of their family members. It has also revoked any US visas held by these individuals. Those affected are linked with the government led by President Daniel Ortega and First Lady Rosario Murillo, which has been accused of violently repressing recent anti-government protests and undermining democracy in Nicaragua. In a press statement, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the visa restriction policy applied to “Nicaraguans believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining democracy, including those with responsibility for, or complicity in, the suppression of peaceful protests or abuse of human rights, and the immediate family members of such persons”. Blinken also specified that the visa restrictions were directed towards Nicaraguans associated with the arrest of 26 opponents of the Ortega administration ahead of the 7 November general election, as well as those involved in the passing of the legislation including the “cybercrimes” law, “foreign agents” law and “sovereignty” law, all passed in recent months which the US Department of State says have “served to restrict and criminalise speech, dissent, and political participation”.
