* Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has announced that a new international airport will be constructed in Tulum, Quintana Roo state, as part of efforts to alleviate the pressure on Cancún International Airport, located some 100km up the coast in the same state. Speaking during his daily press conference on 16 July, López Obrador said that the new airport will have the capacity to receive 4m tourists, but gave no further details as to cost or timeline of the new airport’s planned construction. López Obrador made his announcement amid wider comments about the Tren Maya railway project, a controversial project which plans to connect tourist hotspots of the Yucatán peninsular with historical Mayan sites through 1,500km of railway lines running through five states in the south/south-east, including Quintana Roo. López Obrador blamed a lack of infrastructure in the southeast outside of Cancún, including in the south of Quintana Roo, on the disinterest of past “neoliberal” governments.
