In brief: Colombia’s trade deficit more than doubles in May

* Colombia’s national statistics department (Dane) has published new figures which show the country's trade deficit reached U$1.011bn in May up from US$491.3m in May 2020. According to the same figures, imports totalled US$4.37bn in May, up 52% on May 2020 while exports totalled US$3.10bn, up 39.4% on the same month the previous year. The rise in imports was driven by a 59.4% increase in the importation of manufactured goods which accounted for 77.4% of all imports, followed by agricultural products, food & drink (14.9%) and fuels & products from extractive industries (7.6%). When compared to the pre-coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic figures recorded in May 2019, imports were down 7.6%, which Dane attributed to a 21.9% decline in the importation of machinery and transport equipment.
