PERU: Victory for Castillo, but Fujimori promises trouble ahead

Pedro Castillo was officially proclaimed the victor of Peru’s disputed presidential election on 19 July, putting an end to the longest vote count in Peruvian history. Castillo, representing the far-left Perú Libre (PL), will take office on 28 July, leaving him with a brief window to form a government. Meanwhile, his defeated rival, Keiko Fujimori of the right-wing Fuerza Popular (FP), has indicated that she will continue to foment resistance to Castillo once he is in power, describing his victory as “illegitimate”.
