In brief: DR and US sign new five-year economic development cooperation deal

* The Dominican Republic’s President Luis Abinader, Economy, planning & Development Minister Miguel Ceara Hatton and the chargé d’affaires at the US embassy in Santo Domingo, Robert Thomas, have signed a US$251m agreement for the US Agency for International Development (USAID) to implement a cooperation strategy over the next five years in the Dominican Republic (DR). According to a US embassy press release, the agreement supports investment in environmental conservation, the use of renewable energy, and improving health and other public services. A key focus is on policy reform focussed on “transparency, accountability, equity, social and environmental protection” which seeks to identify practical solutions for policies which can improve public services. The press release notes that since 1962 the US via USAID has assigned US$1.8bn for development projects in the DR.
