Haiti’s crisis intensifies as Moïse assassinated

The assassination of Haiti’s President Jovenel Moïse on 7 July shocked Haitians and the international community alike, appearing to mark the culmination of the multifaceted political, institutional and security crises which has afflicted the country. With the United Nations (UN) recently warning of an “unprecedented surge in gang violence across the capital, Port-au-Prince”, kidnappings rising [SSR-21-06], and high-profile crimes like the August 2020 murder of a prominent lawyer, professor and head of the Port-au-Prince bar association, Monferrier Dorval, going unpunished, here we explore aspects of the security crisis.
