PARAGUAY: The struggle for vaccines

Paraguay was a coronavirus (Covid-19) success story in the earlier months of 2020, managing to keep infections and fatalities down even as South America became the epicentre of the pandemic. The virus began to spread faster from August 2020 onwards, however, and this year Paraguay’s healthcare system buckled under the strain of a virulent wave of infections. The government’s attempts to respond to the public health crisis have been further constrained by its limited access to vaccines, and Paraguay has been dependent on the generosity of its international partners to get its Covid-19 vaccine rollout underway.
