MEXICO: Forced to regulate the use of marihuana

Mexico’s supreme court (SCJN) has issued a landmark ruling that in effect decriminalises the recreational use of marihuana. This puts Mexico’s federal congress under increased pressure to finally come up with legislation that fully regulates the use of marihuana in the country. The approval of a legal framework that regulates the use of marihuana, be it for medical or recreational purposes, will mark a sea change in Mexico that will impact the fight against illegal drugs trafficking in the country, as well as open some economic opportunities for one of the world’s largest marihuana producers.
