SURINAME: A tough first year for Santokhi

On 16 July, President Chandrikapersad Santokhi marked his first year in power. It’s been a difficult first year for the former police commissioner and minister of justice who took over from the unsavoury former coup leader and president (2010-2020) Desi Bouterse who, inter alia, left Suriname with debts amounting to 160% of GDP.
