GUATEMALA: Oligarchy entrenched

The landowning oligarchy in Guatemala remains one of the most conservative business classes in Latin America, controlling traditional exports such as coffee and sugar and continuing to wield enormous political influence. Four main family networks have dominated Guatemala for the past three hundred years according to a local sociologist, Marta Casaus Arzú: Aycinena, Arzú, Urruela and Dí­az-Durán.
