* Mexico’s federal chamber of deputies has ratified
Rogelio Ramírez de la O’s appointment as the new finance minister. Ramírez de la O took over the helm of the finance ministry (SHCP) on 16 July, following President
Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s intention to nominate Ramírez de la O’s predecessor,
Arturo Herrera, as the next central bank (Banxico) president. Ramírez de la O has now been sworn in following the chamber’s ratification of his appointment with 319 votes in favour, 53 against and zero abstentions. An orthodox economist, Ramírez de la O committed to pursuing the economic
“pillars” of the López Obrador administration, notably macroeconomic stability, the government’s
“social vocation”, and
“republican austerity”.
