PANAMA: A country of cousins

A clear example of how crony politics operates in the region, Panama has been dominated by two traditions linked to two families - the rightwing populism of Arnulfismo (associated with a former president, Arnulfo Arias Madrid, and currently the Partido Pañamenista (PPA)) and Torrijismo (the legacy of a social-reformist dictator, Omar Torrijos, represented in the ruling Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD).
