In brief: Colombia’s coffee sector recovering from impact of protests

* Colombia’s national federation of coffee producers (FNC) has announced that production is “returning to normal” after major disruption caused by the blockading of transit routes by anti-government protesters in May and June. An FNC press release stated that 1.20m 60kg sacks of green coffee were produced in July – a decrease of 8% on the 1.31m that were produced in the same month last year. The FNC did not release monthly figures for May and June, stating that the unrest had impeded accurate measures of production. Coffee production from January-July amounted to 7m sacks, representing a year-on-year increase of 2%, whilst the FNC stated that over the most recent coffee-growing year (October 2020-July 2021) production “remained practically unchanged” compared to the previous year, with 10.6m sacks exported.
