NICARAGUA: Ortega and Murillo confirm re-election bid

Latin America has seen no shortage of electoral surprises in recent years as volatile voters in an increasingly turbulent world reject mainstream political parties. It is nonetheless fair to say that a defeat for President Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua’s presidential elections on 7 November would exceed any of these results in terms of shock factor. Ortega was formally anointed as the presidential candidate of the ruling left-wing Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) on 2 August and duly registered his candidacy before the supreme electoral council (CSE).
