The nationwide anti-corruption protests staged on 29 July demanding the resignation of President Alejandro Giammattei and the attorney general, Consuelo Porras, did not meet their objective: Giammattei and Porras are still there. But there is little question that the scale of the protests took them both aback, as well as the swift and emphatic condemnation from the US government of the dismissal of the head of the special anti-corruption unit (Feci), Juan Francisco Sandoval, by Porras [WR-21-30]. The firing of Sandoval served as the catalyst for the protests.
