In brief: Mexico’s international tourism continues to recover

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released new figures showing that the country received 3.12m international tourists in June 2021, a 211% increase on the 1m foreign tourists that visited the country in June 2020. The sharp rise in visits is explained by the gradual easing on international travel restrictions that were imposed by countries around the world (though not in Mexico) to try to contain the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Tourists arriving via air accounted for the main increase in arrivals and reached 1.47m, compared with just 134,949 in June 2020. Inegi also indicated that revenue from international tourism increased by 937.1% year-on-year, from US$181.6m in June 2020 to US$1.88bn in June 2021. The revenue from international tourists thus exceeded the pre-pandemic levels of June 2019, when international tourists spend US$1.8bn in the country, even though the volume of tourists remains below pre-pandemic levels, with Mexico receiving 3.9m international tourists in June 2019.
