In brief: Mexico’s industrial production rises

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released new figures for its monthly index of industrial activity (Imai), which show that industrial production rose by 10.5% in the first six months of 2021 compared with the same period last year. This performance was particularly boosted by increased production in the manufacturing industries (15.2%), construction (9.5%), and mining (1.6%) but it was undermined by a 0.9% contraction in the utilities sector (electricity generation and transmission, provision of water and gas). In June alone, industrial production registered year-on-year growth of 13.5%, with production growth across all mentioned sectors: 16.3% in manufacturing industries, 15.2% in construction, 7.1% in utilities, and 5% in mining. In seasonally adjusted terms, however, the Imai fell by 0.5% in June compared with May, with a negative monthly performance across all sectors.
