In brief: Brazil’s domestic air travel on path to recovery

* The Associação Brasileira das Empresas Aéreas (Abear), Brazil’s airline association, has informed that this August represents the fourth consecutive month of increased domestic air travel. Using data from the national civil aviation authority (Anac), Abear has recorded an average 1,680 departures per day in August, equivalent to 70% of the number of flights on offer at the beginning of March 2020, before the effects of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic were felt on domestic travel. Air travel figures for August so far are the second best since the start of the pandemic, behind January 2021 when domestic flights represented 74.9% of pre-pandemic operations. “We’ve reached the fourth consecutive month of growth, demonstrating that vaccination against Covid-19 is influencing the increase in demand in the air travel sector,” the Abear president, Eduardo Sanovicz, said, stressing that the continuation of the vaccine rollout is “essential” for the recovery of domestic air travel industry to continue. Around 55% of the Brazilian population has had at least one jab, while almost 24% are fully vaccinated.
