In brief: Third union joins strike at Chile’s Codelco

* Chile's state-owned copper miner, Codelco, has announced that a third trade union representing workers at its Andina mine, located some 80km northeast of Santiago, has gone on strike after rejecting a new collective contract agreement that the unions complain removes health benefits for new employees, as well as compensation related to years of service. The Sindicato de Unión Plantas (Suplant) has joined Sindicato Industrial de Integración Laboral (SIIL) and the Sindicato Unificado de Trabajadores (SUT) which started industrial action on 12 August. In a statement, however, Codelco warned that the company’s latest offer was the “best that the company can make”.
