* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released new figures which show Mexico’s unemployment rate stood at 4.2% in the second quarter of the year, equivalent to 2.4m people in search of work. This is down from the 4.8% unemployment rate registered at the same point in 2020, amid stronger impacts from the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The Inegi report showed that Mexico’s economically active population - people over the age of 15 who are employed or seeking employment - has grown by 10.7m people compared with the same period in 2020 and totalled 57.7m, equivalent to 59% of the overall population aged 15 and over. Meanwhile, the underemployment rate fell to 13.3% in June this year, from 25.1% in the same quarter in 2020.
