In brief: Argentina’s unconventional gas production breaks record

*Argentina’s energy secretariat has announced that the country broke its unconventional natural gas production record in July with 64.9m cubic metres of the fuel produced per day in the month, a 17.3% year-on-year increase. Argentina’s unconventional natural gas production is concentrated in the ‘Vaca Muerta’ shale oil and gas fields, said to contain the world’s second largest shale gas deposits, located in the southern Patagonia area. The production record comes after last year the Argentine government the launched Plan Gas.Ar programme that seeks to increase domestic natural gas production so that this can satisfy domestic demand and become less reliant on exports of the fossil fuel by 2024.
