In brief: Argentina receives IMF boost

* Argentina’s economy ministry has announced that it has received US$4.3bn from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as part of the expansion of its Special Drawing Rights (SDR) programme. The transfer was in line with the IMF’s largest-ever allocation of SDRs for its member countries, equivalent to US$650bn, announced on 2 August to boost global liquidity and help countries cope with the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. It will strengthen Argentina’s international reserves as the country is currently negotiating its US$44bn debt to the IMF.
