In brief: Panama’s economic activity continues to recover

* Panama’s national statistics institute (Inec) has released figures which show that the country’s monthly indicator of economic activity (Imae) posted year-on-year growth of 24.9% in June 2021. It cites mining, trade, private health services, and public administration as sectors which posted a good performance. According to Inec, the latest figures indicate that the economy is in the process of recovery following the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic which caused Panama’s GDP to shrink 17.9% in 2020. Last month the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America & the Caribbean (Eclac) forecast that Panama’s GDP will grow by 12% in 2021.
