CHILE: An uncommonly crowded presidential line-up

The deadline for registering candidates ahead of Chile’s 21 November general election passed on 23 August and the line-up of candidates that will be running in the presidential race is now complete. In a sign of the reigning political fragmentation in the country, a total of nine different candidates registered for the presidential race. The ideologies represented by the registered candidates span the political spectrum from the radical left to the extreme right. This reflects the failure by political parties and movements both on the Left and Right to build broad coalitions, as had traditionally been the case in Chile. It also answers to the continuation of a trend that has seen the electorate increasingly vote for non-traditional and independent politicians in recent years. Indeed, the fragmentation and surfeit of candidates provides the best opportunity for three decades for an ‘outsider’ to win the presidency.
