HAITI: Learning from the past?

Following the earthquake which struck earlier this month, which has killed over 2,000 people on the latest official reports, Haiti’s prime minister Ariel Henry last week tweeted that his government does not “intend to repeat history on the mismanagement and coordination of aid”. This is a reference to major criticisms of the response to the earthquake which devastated Haiti in 2010. United Nations (UN) Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, who last week flew to Haiti to express the UN’s “unwavering support to the Haitian people”, also said there were lessons to be learnt from 2010. Yet major doubts persist as to whether this will be the case, while the kidnapping of two doctors and presence of gangs, which is complicating the response, illustrate immediate challenges in addressing the situation.
