DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Abinader presents one year balance sheet

President Luis Abinader last week completed his first year in office. In his state-of-the-nation address he was quick to underline as key achievements of his Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM) government, economic reactivation, job recovery, and its response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Yet civil-society groups challenge these claims of success. In particular, they question progress with regard to anti-corruption efforts, a key electoral pledge, with public anger over the issue serving as a major contributing factor to the defeat of the long-ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) government (2004-2020) that preceded Abinader.
