PANAMA: Cortizo draws transparency concerns

“Morally incorrect”. This was the reaction of Fundación para el Desarrollo de la Libertad Ciudadana (FDLC), the local chapter of anti-corruption NGO Transparency International (TI), to a new executive resolution (71) issued earlier this month by Panama’s President Laurentino Cortizo which restricts access to public information. The resolution, which prompted protests last week and at least one legal appeal, comes as the Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD) government has already faced criticism over the lack of transparency surrounding its response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic [WR-20-18] and more generally, from TI, over anti-corruption efforts while in office.
