In brief: Peru’s mining exports exceed pre-pandemic levels

* Peru’s national society for mining, oil and energy (SNMPE) has released new figures which show that the country’s mining exports totalled US$21.63bn in January-July 2021, a 69.5% increase on the same period last year. This year’s mining exports now exceed pre-coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic levels, as they have increased 35.6% compared with the same period in 2019. Driven by strong prices, the value of exports of copper, the largest component in Peru’s mining exports, increased by 78% year-on-year to US$11.16bn, while gold – the second largest mining export – grew 37.5% to US$5.58bn. For the month of July alone, mining exports totalled US$3.08bn, up from US$2.15bn in July 2020 and US$2.42bn in July 2019.
