In brief: UN requests funds for Northern Triangle humanitarian response

* The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is requesting US$588m for humanitarian response in Central America’s so-called ‘Northern Triangle’ (El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras), to address the needs of 4.3m of the most vulnerable people up to December 2022. According to OCHA, 8.3m people require emergency assistance. It notes that while the three countries are considered middle-income, about 25% of their total populations need humanitarian assistance – an increase of 60% compared with the 5.2m people assessed in need in the three countries in early 2020. This increase has been attributed to various factors such as climate change, chronic violence, limited access to health services and migration flows within and beyond its territory.
