BRAZIL: Pro-Bolsonaro demos deepen institutional clash

The much-hyped 7 September Independence Day demonstrations in Brazil, organised by supporters of President Jair Bolsonaro and encouraged by the head of state, did not turn into a violent attempted power grab as some feared. Nor were they a complete flop for the president. They have merely served to further deepen the rift between Bolsonaro and the country’s institutions, notably the judiciary, foreshadowing a continuation of the institutional tensions and political confusion which have dominated Brasília in recent months.
