HONDURAS: Campaigns begin ahead of November

Campaigns have officially kicked off ahead of presidential and congressional elections in Honduras on 28 November. As with previous electoral surveys, the latest polls suggest that the favourite is Tegucigalpa mayor Nasry ‘Tito’ Asfura, the presidential candidate for President Juan Orlando Hernández’s right-wing Partido Nacional (PN), which has been in office since 2010. However, surveys also indicate widespread apathy, stemming from longstanding complaints about corruption, the lack of any meaningful electoral reform (fuelling fears of a repeat of the irregularities which tarnished the 2017 election) or any concrete proposals. This would suggest little public hope that the candidates represent any significant change or are likely to tackle the key electoral concerns – corruption and unemployment.
