Bolivian soldiers arrested in Chile

The arrest of three Bolivian soldiers in northern Chile on theft and firearms charges has triggered a diplomatic spat between the two countries, with Chile’s government protesting the violation of its sovereignty and condemning an exchange of fire that took place before the arrests. The Bolivian authorities are insisting that the soldiers were conducting a security operation and have thrown their support behind the detainees. The incident may undermine recent efforts to improve the fractious bilateral relationship.
