PERU: Guzmán’s death puts Castillo on the spot

The death of Abimael Guzmán is causing a political commotion in Peru. At any other time under any other government the death of the imprisoned founder and leader of the guerrilla group Sendero Luminoso (SL) would have grabbed headlines, with no shortage of obituaries about his nefarious role in Peru’s modern history, but it would not have had anything like the political resonance that it has today. Guzmán’s baleful legacy has come into sharp focus because of alleged links between members of the government led by President Pedro Castillo, especially the prime minister, Guido Bellido, and SL. Castillo now has the opportunity to distance his far-left Perú Libre (PL) government from SL and the violent extremist left.
